About the project

Background
This project addresses critical global challenges, such as climate change and environmental degradation, by promoting the integration of Environmental, Social, and Governance (ESG) criteria in Azerbaijan. While ESG practices are increasingly adopted worldwide to foster sustainable development, Azerbaijan faces unique obstacles, particularly in waste management. With only 41% of waste being reused or neutralized and widespread informal processing, there is a clear need for structured ESG practices in the region. This initiative builds on prior successful environmental projects in Azerbaijan and aims to create a comprehensive framework to integrate ESG principles across sectors, and aligning national strategies with global climate goals.

Project Goals and Activities
The primary objective of this project is to enhance ESG integration in Azerbaijan, particularly within waste management, to support sustainable development and climate action. Key activities include:

  1. Research and Analysis: Conduct in-depth research on current ESG practices, focusing on integrating circular economy models and identifying global best practices.
  2. Guidance Development: Create a guidance document for organizations, helping them incorporate circularity into their operations while aligning with ESG standards. Up to seven workshops will be held to educate and engage stakeholders.
  3. Web Portal Creation: Develop a comprehensive online platform to centralize information on Azerbaijan’s green policies, renewable energy, and environmental legislation, enhancing public accessibility and awareness.
  4. Capacity Building: Organize a Training of Trainers (TOT) program with international experts to build local capacity in ESG practices, empowering a network of local consultants to guide sustainable development.

Success Indicators
The project’s success will be evaluated by:

  • Distributing the guidance document to 700 organizations.
  • Achieving a 20% commitment rate from organizations to integrate ESG criteria.
  • Establishing an active web portal with measurable engagement.
  • Training local experts in ESG through the TOT program to ensure lasting impacts.

Stakeholder Involvement
Key stakeholders include government agencies, international bodies like the International Solid Waste Association (ISWA), educational institutions, and private and public organizations. By engaging these entities, the project seeks to build broad-based support and foster collaboration. Specific efforts will target Baku White City’s communities, women entrepreneurs, and the global climate community, positioning Azerbaijan as a leader in sustainable practices.

Long-term Sustainability
The project ensures long-term sustainability by embedding ESG principles into essential activities. The guidance document and educational workshops will drive ongoing behavioral change, while the web portal will provide continuous public access to critical environmental information. Additionally, the TOT program will establish a network of local ESG experts, ensuring sustained support for Azerbaijan’s environmental initiatives and alignment with international ESG standards.
